Hello,

I work with a organization that is launching a summer youth gardening program. I would like to seek your opinion or knowledge on what kind of values parents prefer in evaluating summer gardening camps over other types of summer youth camps?

it encourages slave child labor and makes the veggies cheaper to buy because of the low cost labor.

    simple economics

If you are affiliated with a food pantry or other local charity where you donate part of the garden produce to them, then the kids can learn not only how to grow food and appreciate what the land around us can offer, but also it will show the kids how they can contribute to their community as well.

  • I would have to say the “work ethic”. Don’t get me wrong, summer camp is great for a child’s social development but life is not all about fun and games. There is something magical about seeing the sweat from your brow turn into something alive. It’s something the most awkward non athlete child can excel in and carry with him into adulthood. Like anything don’t let it be a mono culture but interspersed with fun and games as well. RScott

to develop a work ethic and get the idea, that physical labor is beneath their dignity out of these children. i’ve known too many teens and young adults, they call themselves adult, that thought labor/work was for other people. growing things gives a satisfaction, growing food is especially rewarding. teach them how to cook some of their produce, the out of the ordinary; pesto, jams treats i doubt they are getting at home but will like.
